Thursday, July 7, 2016

In Boston, a young woman finds herself pregnant--even though she is still a virgin.
In Ireland, another young woman discovers she is in the same impossible condition.
And in cities all around the world, medical authorities are overwhelmed by epidemics, droughts, famines, floods, and worse. It all feels like a sign that something awful is coming.
Anne Fitzgerald, a former nun turned private investigator, is hired by the Archdiocese of Boston to investigate the immaculate conceptions. Even as she comes to care about and trust the young women, she realizes that both are in great danger. Terrifying forces of light and darkness are gathering. Stepping into uncharted territory where the unknown is just the beginning, Anne must discover the truth--to save the young women, to save herself, and to protect the future of all mankind.

Goodreads Summary
I loved this story. Two girls claim to be pregnant while still virgins.  Anne is the P.I. on the case.  She must determine for the Archdiocese which girl is telling the truth.  It's certainly not an easy task and I loved being able to read from multiple different viewpoints.  The reader is actually able to get into each characters' heads and understand their thought processes.  I loved how Patterson portrayed each girl as innocent and made it so that the reader could not guess which carried the son of God vs Satan (pretty big difference).  I never could have guessed the ending in a million years and it was glorious!

Anne was my favorite character.  She acted as my guide throughout the novel.  Ironically, she was just as confused as me as to who was potentially telling the truth.  Colleen (Ireland) and Kathleen (America) were both kind, nice girls.  I liked Colleen's delicate nature and Kathleen's stubborn refusal to think of the events of a certain day (I sort of did guess Kathleen's situation).  You can't have a Satanic theme without spooky parts and those parts were just scary enough to deliver!  This book is highly recommended to young adult/adult readers.
