And The Trees Crept In by Dawn Kurtagich

A stunning, terrifying novel about a house the color of blood and the two sisters who are trapped there, by The Dead House author Dawn Kurtagich

When Silla and Nori arrive at their aunt's home, it's immediately clear that the "blood manor" is cursed. The creaking of the house and the stillness of the woods surrounding them would be enough of a sign, but there are secrets too--the questions that Silla can't ignore: Who is the beautiful boy that's appeared from the woods? Who is the man that her little sister sees, but no one else? And why does it seem that, ever since they arrived, the trees have been creeping closer?

Filled with just as many twists and turns as The Dead House, and with achingly beautiful, chilling language that delivers haunting scenes, AND THE TREES CREPT IN is the perfect follow-up novel for master horror writer Dawn Kurtagich.

Goodreads Summary

Another wonderful horror by Dawn Kurtagich!  Silla and Nori live with their aunt after escaping from their abusive home without their mother.  Silla feels responsible for Nori and tries to be a stand-in mother for her.  Unfortunately, her aunt is a little (to say the least) off and Nori is talking to a strange man that Silla has never met.  There are too many things that she can't control and she doesn't have a good grasp as to what is actually going on.

I was sympathetic to Silla's character, but I didn't necessarily like her the entire time.  She was definitely human and had flaws.  I was surprised at a bunch of the decisions she ended up making.  Nori was a cute character.  She was delicate and reminded me a little of a fairy.  She was almost ethereal, at times.  I loved Gowan's character.  I could tell that he truly loved and wanted the best for Silla.  I really respected him.  The ending was a bit of a surprise and the story was very skillfully woven together.  I had to really pay attention to get the most out of the book and catch all of the hidden intricacies.  If you don't pay attention while reading this book you will miss important details, events, and dialogue.  I loved how it all came together in the end.  This book would be a mysterious read for young adult/adult readers.
