The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness

Thursday, July 17, 2014

After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness’s enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.

With more than one million copies sold in the United States and appearing in thirty-eight foreign editions, A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night have landed on all of the major bestseller lists and garnered rave reviews from countless publications. Eagerly awaited by Harkness’s legion of fans, The Book of Life brings this superbly written series to a deeply satisfying close.
Goodreads Summary

In the third and final release of the "All Souls," trilogy we jump right back into the supernatural action. The long anticipated release of this book was a little bit of a wait, but well worth the extra time that was put into its drop. We get our fix of good romance mixed with some legitimate historical themes thrown in to make a great well rounded finale. Fans of  the paranormal and magic themed books will feel right at home as well because this trilogy explores these themes extensively and quite creatively.

What I really liked about the third book compared to the other two is that it brings back some old characters and explores their back stories further. It was specifically fun for me to see the De Clermont family again and learn a little bit more about them. With this in mind, we get a lot of details finally woven together to make a better understanding of the characters and their connections throughout the trilogy. If you have read the other two books, this is a must read as it sums the series up very nicely with a few more intense battles and some more interesting and creative situations. If you have not read the other two books, read them and then read this book. This is not a trilogy to miss!

Deborah Harkness is an author I've been meaning to read the most. Especially that I'm a fan of Anne Rice and her witches, I've been looking for something exactly like her books when a fellow bookworm and Anne Rice fan recommended me "A Discovery of Witches." And since then I've been trying to look out for the right time and binge-read the series!
